DGS®-DRYDEN GLASS SAND FOR ECO-FRIENDLY WATER FILTRATION
DGS® is an advanced filtration media made from 100% recycled glass in Dryden Aqua’s state-of-the-art facilities. Unlike Activated Filter Media (AFM), DGS® is produced from mixed glass and is not activated.
Despite this, DGS® delivers ultra-fine mechanical filtration while significantly minimising bacterial clogging compared to traditional sand filters. Produced in full compliance with ISO standards, DGS® undergoes a unique washing process using 100% rainwater, ensuring the purest and safest non-activated glass media available today.
BENEFITS OF DGS®
- Cleaner, Clearer Water: Removes up to 30% more particles than standard sand filters.
- Reduced Chemical Use: Achieve high filtration efficiency with less chlorine consumption.
- Healthier Environment: Minimizes trichloramine formation for better air quality in swimming areas.
- Lower Water Waste: Requires shorter and slower backwashing (240 seconds to clear 99% of retained particles at 45 m/hr).
- Long-Lasting Performance: Maintains consistent efficiency throughout its life and lasts twice as long as sand.
DGS® vs. Traditional Sand vs. AFM®: Key Differences
| Feature | DGS® (Dryden Glass Sand) | Traditional Filter Sand | AFM® (Activated Filter Media) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material & Processing | Made from 100% recycled mixed glass. Washed and processed but not activated | Naturally occurring silica. Minimal processing. | Made from specific recycled glass (green/brown) and subjected to a proprietary 3-step activation process |
| Filtration Performance | Removes up to 30% more particles than sand and filters particles down to ~7 microns | Standard filtration removes larger particles. Less effective against fine contaminants. | Filters at least twice as effectively as sand. Captures particles 4x smaller than sand or standard glass media |
| Bio-Resistance | Biofouling is less than that of sand due to a smooth surface, but it is not bio-resistant | Porous surface promotes bacterial growth and biofilm formation (mud-balling) | Bio-resistant and self-sterilising. The activation process inhibits bacterial growth and prevents biofouling. |
| Backwash Efficiency | Requires shorter, slower backwashes (e.g., 240 seconds at 45 m/hr) | Requires longer, faster backwashes and often air scouring to clean effectively | Most efficient backwash. Requires 4-6 minutes at 30-50 m/h. Saves up to 50% of backwash water compared to sand |
| Lifespan & Value | Lasts 2-5 times longer than sand. Low maintenance and cost-effective | Typically needs replacement every 3-5 years as it wears and becomes less effective. | Longest lifespan, often 20+ years. Performance remains consistent and never needs recharging |
| Cost | Lower-cost option than AFM®, priced similarly to standard sand, but provides better performance | Lowest initial cost. | Higher initial cost but offers the highest performance and lowest long-term operational costs. |
